Day 7: Life's a Beach

Sunday, April 7, 2013 9:10p

I woke up this morning and thought, if I was on vacation, I would be heading home today. On this trip I am trading restful and relaxing for rewarding. (see what I did there with the alliteration??)

I'm going to keep this post short as I have to be up a 3a to catch the bus to Nicaragua tomorrow morning.

Today was a day we had all been looking forward to: Our one day on the beach. I was able to get to bed early last night (midnight) and was able to sleep in a bit today (7a). My definitions of going to bed early and sleeping in have definitely changed.

Occasionally on Sundays, the electricity is shut off for maintenance. Everyone goes to the beach... and this is how most travel.

My lunch

Since we arrived in El Salvador we kept wanting to try Pollo Campero... today was our chance... times three. I went with Gladys and Ariella for breakfast. We ran through the drive thru and grabbed Ariella some breakfast and dropped her off at a friend's house Gladys and I went to Pizza Hut for breakfast. Interesting, eh? They have desayuno Americano at Pizza Hut every morning. I had a bagel sandwich. Then, we went back through the drive thru at Pollo Campero and got some chicken for our lunch later. We heard it was better than KFC (like that is hard to do?) and it was. AND THEN, we had a quick supper as a group tonight, and to my surprise, it was again at Pollo Campero... I mean, I like fried chicken as much as the next guy, but I think I'm ready for a salad!

Another area of note, we are getting a bit slap happy at this point. Here are some of the highlights we think are hilarious that you probably will not.

  • Every greeting here is with an embrace and a kiss on the cheek between men and women and women and women. When you first meet someone, enter a room, exit a room, get up to go to the bathroom (ok, that is a stretch), you embrace with a kiss so you get quite used to just leaning in for the kiss. Last night, when greeting a man who came a bit late, Parker instinctively leaned in, and the man pulled back quickly and said, "NO KISSES!"
  • Jimmy saw a VW bug and called out SLUG BUG, and I hit him. Jimmy: "I don't know the rules, but I'm pretty sure I get to hit you in the face." (Christi quickly quipped, "Hey, I don't make the rules." If I had to pick a slogan for this trip, I would say that would be it.)
  • Our tour guide in San Salvador: "Having a cow is a big deal. It's like having two Blackberries." (Meaning phones and meaning a cow cost $600.)
  • A few new Salvadorian words I have learned (and I know Christi can add a ton more):
  1. Puchica::Damn (a light curse word).
  2. Pajero::A liar, but someone you know is lying, ex. C'mon, Don't be a pajero to me.

Another day, another country (or two) tomorrow. We will drive through Honduras to get to Nicaragua. Our first stop is Chinandega (I think).

Puchica it's getting late.
